Community Services

Community Services is one function of the Community College. The Community Education Program at Los Angeles Southwest College offers a variety of non-traditional activities for the purpose of meeting the individual and community needs not served by the College degree or certificated programs. There are no transcripts or grades.

Offerings include educational, cultural and recreational activities as well as seminars and workshops. The Community Services programs for adults (18 and over) include short-team non-credit activities in personal development and skill improvement. Special programs have been designed to meet the needs of youth (ages 6 – 18) in the skills improvement area, and activities are offered for enrichment in such areas as languages and performing arts; however, a small fee is charged for some activities. The Community Services Program establishes linkages with related college and community programs to supplement and coordinate other than existing offerings.

 

Foster/Kinship Care Education (FKCE)

Come to FKCE when you:

• Take care of a relative’s child
• Think you would like to care for a child in the “system”
• Need to complete mandated state foster care education
• Care for other’s child/children and want to improve your parenting skills

 

Los Angeles Southwest College is known for their large Foster/Kinship Care Educational Program that we have been offering for over 10 years. We are proud of our contribution to the community and are dedicated to doing our best in serving the Los Angeles Southwest Community Family.

Independent Living Program (ILP)

This program provides independent living skills training to Los Angeles foster youth, ages 16 – 18, through 18 area community colleges. Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) Independent Living Program (ILP) Coordinators refer foster youth to California Community College Foundation (CCCF)-ILP for the training. Foundation Outreach Advisors personally recruit foster youth to participate in the program and college Program Directors coordinate the program at the college level.

 

Early Start to Emancipation (E-STEP)

Provides training to youth in foster care, ages 13 - 15, through an interagency agreement with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Classes include information on Relationships, Self-Esteem, Dating, Sexuality, Teen and Peer Pressure. There will be many guest speakers to encourage and motivate students.

 

Young Scholars Summer Camp Youth Program

Starting June 18, 2007 - August 10, 2007 Discount Days - Now through June 2nd

This program is an 8 weeks unforgettable summer camp for 1st grade through 8th grade. From 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. we have our Enrichment Program which covers the following; Reading, Math, English and Science. Lunch is served from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. which we do provide. From 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. we have our Special Workshops, Arts & Crafts, Sports and Dance (Choose one special p.m. workshop only for the entire 8 weeks). Camp days are Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Field trips are every Friday. Hot Lunch and Afternoon snacks offered Monday through Thursday, Sack Lunch on Friday.

Pre-Service Classes for Foster/Kinship Care Providers

Medical Foster Care Pre-Service Education Program Schedule Rate “F” Certification Training for Foster Parents (16)

You must be a Foster Parent for two years or have a medical background in order to take these 16-hours (4 session) F-Rate pre-service class.

Specialized Foster Care Pre-Service Education Program Schedule Rate “D” Certification Training for Foster Parents (18)

 

Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) Foster Care Providers interested in caring for children in foster care who are assessed by the Department of Mental Health as D-Rate. The D-Rate is for children who exhibit severe and persistent emotional and behavioral problems in a family home setting.

 

Kinship Orientation

This program provides an overview of the process in which a relative caregiver needs to go through in order to care for a relative who is a dependent of the court and has been placed in out-of home care.

 

KEPS Training

(Kinship Education Preparation and Support)

 

Kinship caregivers' entitlement to financial assistance and other crucial resources is well an access to quality training (comparable to what foster parents receive) has been a long difficult struggle led by kinship providers like yourself hardworking, caring people who only want the best for the children in their care. Children living with relatives will have their safety, emotional and developmental needs met. Children's educational growth will be supported and enhanced through the relative caregivers' partnership with the school system. Relative caregivers will be able to help older adolesents access educational and vocational services in order to achieve successful emancipation. Relative caregivers will have an ongoing, informal social support network made up of other relative caregivers.

 

Permanency & Safety Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (PS MAPP)

The Goal of the PS-MAPP Group Preparation and Selection Program is to prepare individuals and families to make an informed decision about becoming foster, adoptive or foster/adoptive families. The decision is made with the child welfare agency and is based on the capability and willingness to take on the "role" and develop the skills needed to foster and/or adopt. Foster and adoptive families who make good decisions and grow in their new roles work best with the agency, birth families and others. These partnerships help children and youth have stability and permanence with a family.

 

CPR

Upon completion of this one-day workshop, the American Red Cross will certify you for one year in community CPR. Community CPR covers adult, child, and infant in CPR rescue breathing, obstructed airway and more. The cost for CPR is $50.00. Date: March 24, 2007, May, 12, 2007 and June 2, 2007, Time: 9:00am - 3:30pm

 

First Aid

Upon completion of this one-day workshop, the American Red Cross will certify you for three years in standard first aid. First Aid covers sudden illness, fractures, bleeding, shock, stroke, etc. The cost for First Aid is $30.00. Date: April 21, 2007, May 26, 2007 and June 9, 2007, Time: 9:00am

Notary Public Seminar -

Would you like to earn extra income and build a small business of your own? Why not consider becoming a Loan Document Signing Agent or a Notary Public. You might even want to renew your Commission! The Training Seminar is designed to equip the participant with the knowledge to be a "proficient" Notary and "Pass the State Exam"! Collegiate Search Youth Organization

SAT Preparation and Tutorial Classes are offer here at Southwest College to accommodate various levels of student preparedness. These services will continue until students successfully reach their level of test readiness. Tutoring classes are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

 

GED Preparation Workshop

This 10-week workshop will prepare you for all five GED subject areas: Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing. Practice exams will be given. Emphasis will be placed on the content and nature of the GED exam. GED is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Registration fee is $80.00 and the Textbook is $22.00 in the bookstore.

Occupational safety and health Administration: Construction safety training is and excellent course for experienced foreman and supervisors already in the construction field to refresh there memory about the OSHA regulations. The Army Corps of Engineers health and Safety Requirements Manual EM 385-1-1 require leadsment to have completed at least the 10 hour OSHA Construction training every three years. The class covers Electrical, Fall Protection, Scoffolds, Excavations, Stairs and Ladders, material handling, Storage, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Elevators and Conveyors, Vehicles, Heavy Equipment and Forklifts.
